Informationen für B.Sc. und M.Sc. Studierende
Bachelor Students
If you are interested in continuing your studies in the research direction of theoretical quantum information, we advise you to follow the course Quantentheorie der Vielteilchensysteme in the 6th Bachelor semester.
In order to get familiar with some of the research in quantum information you can choose to do a bachelor thesis with one of the researchers of the JARA IQI. Topics for bachelor theses will be posted here around the Tag der Physik in January. You can follow this link to see bachelor theses of previous years to get an impression. It may also be possible to do a mixed theory/experiment bachelor or master thesis under co-supervision of someone from the Quantum Information Theory Group and the Quantum Technology Group.
Master Students
During the first year of the Physics Master program, we advise students to follow the courses in the Theory Condensed Matter track, see the information here.
Quantum Information is not a stand-alone subject and requires a good grounding in condensed-matter physics and/or quantum optics. Other research in quantum information requires strength in mathematical physics as well as interest in cross connections to information theory and theoretical computer science.
We require Master's students to take the Master's course on Quantum Information which is held in the first year of the Master in the summer. Optional courses which form a good preparation for a Master thesis in Quantum Information are (please check the list of current QI-related courses)
- Quantum Optics (often held in the Fall semester)
- Computational Physics
- Specialized Courses and Seminars in Theoretical or Experimental Condensed-Matter Physics
The topic for a Master's Thesis is typically decided between the professor and the interested student. Please check here for examples of previous Master's theses.
Master thesis work in Jülich in the institute of Prof. DiVincenzo, under supervision of Prof. Wegewijs (quantum transport), Dr. Catelani (superconducting qubits), Dr. Mohammad H. Ansari and Dr. Roman Riwar is also possible.
Application
If interested in doing Master's thesis research, please send your CV, transcripts of bachelor records (and Master's courses to the extent that it is available), and statement of your interest either to the particular researcher that you would like to work with, or to Prof. Hassler for general inquiry. Decisions to accept students will typically be made right before the end of the lectures in the summer semester.
